Abstract
The Kock pouch or continent ileostomy was first performed in the late 1960s and continued to be popular up to the 1980s. The surgery is performed by few surgeons and is generally not well known, however there are still people living with Kock pouches in Canada and the surgery is occasionally still performed. Many of the people who have a Kock pouch are now elderly and require assistance with their care.
This presentation focuses on a case study of one such person. An elderly gentleman was admitted to a long-term care facility (LTC) who was unable to adequately empty his pouch.
None of the staff at the facility had any experience with the care of a Kock pouch and were initially advised to have the resident wear an ostomy pouch since there was so much overflow from the pouch. Nursing staff at the facility asked for assistance from the NSWOC who provided consultation services to the facility. The NSWOC was able to educate the nursing staff on assessment, how to catheterize the pouch and what to do when there are ongoing management issues.
The presentation will review this process and discuss the nursing care of the person with a Kock pouch and the importance of follow up by an NSWOC.
